Michigan State Fair Urban Agriculture Scholarship Program

For more than 10 years, this program has awarded over $200,000 in scholarships to more than 100 youth, ages 5 to 21, recognizing their dedication to community, family, school, and church gardens.

Through hands-on experience in food production, harvesting,

pest management, and community service, these young growers develop essential skills while making meaningful contributions to their communities. Jerry Hebron, Executive Director of Northend Christian CDC, serves as the Urban Agriculture Scholarship Chairperson on the Michigan State Fair Steering Committee.

A vital aspect of the program is its ability to connect rural and urban youth, fostering relationships that break down barriers and create a shared vision for the future of sustainable agriculture.

Historically, inner-city youth—particularly Black and Brown youth—have been underrepresented in the scholarship and resource opportunities provided by the Michigan State Fair. This initiative helps bridge that gap, ensuring that young urban growers receive the same recognition and support as their rural counterparts.
