Food Safety Training Program

Oakland Avenue Urban Farm is committed to upholding the highest food safety standards to ensure the well-being of our community and the integrity of our local food system.

Through a partnership with Michigan State University Extension,

we provide Food Safety Training that equips local growers, food entrepreneurs, and farmworkers with the knowledge needed to handle, process, and distribute food safely.

As the only urban farm in Detroit with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Certification, Oakland Avenue Urban Farm has established a traceable food safety plan, ensuring accountability in the event of a food recall.

Through education, certification, and hands-on training, we are strengthening Detroit’s urban agriculture network and ensuring safe, locally grown food for all.

Our Farm Manager, Billy Hebron, is certified to conduct GAP audits, reinforcing our commitment to excellence. In addition to maintaining our own rigorous safety standards, we train and mentor emerging growers and food entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills needed to navigate food safety regulations and build sustainable food-based businesses.

Through education, certification, and hands-on training, we are strengthening Detroit’s urban agriculture network and ensuring safe, locally grown food for all.
