Northend Community Resource Center

The Northend Community Resource Center (NECRC) is a dynamic hub for learning, collaboration, and community empowerment in Detroit’s North End.

Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation,

Phase 1 established a welcoming space where residents and creatives can access essential resources, connect with others, and gain support for projects that strengthen the neighborhood. Originally conceived as a design resource library, NECRC has evolved into an active resource center, providing free Wi-Fi, laptops for loan, resume and cover letter assistance, and printing services to ensure equitable access to technology and information.

The center also offers cultural and agricultural books, workshops, and public events to foster skill-building, economic development, and creative expression. Complimentary snacks are provided during workshops and events to create a comfortable and inviting environment.

As NECRC continues to grow, it remains a key resource for the North End, fostering resilience, opportunity, and collaboration for generations to come.

This initiative was shaped by partnerships with Design Core Detroit, the University of Michigan’s Taubman Public Design Corps, the College for Creative Studies, and Oakland Avenue Urban Farm, bringing together expertise in urban design, community development, and creative industries.

Now entering Phase 2, funded by an Enterprise Project for Public Spaces award, NECRC is expanding with four fully outfitted container units, adding 1,800-2,000 square feet of new space. This expansion will feature a green rooftop with seating and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the Agri-Art Alleyway, providing a unique setting for creativity and community gatherings. The new space will house a maker space for 3D printing and other emerging creative technologies, offering guests access to cutting-edge tools and opportunities for innovation.

NECRC is open and available to the community free of charge and also serves as an event rental space for meetings and private events.
